Cartoon Cartoon (Jacob Kurien, Aug 3rd, 2007)

What kid can say that they didn't spend their hours glued to the television viewing their favorite cartoons? Cartoons evolved from the very basic like Yogi Bear to the more advanced in Swat Kats. I still remember the very first cartoon I saw - Pixie and Dixie on our innaugral television which was devoid of any real color besides black, white and all gradients in between. I can still watch a half hour of a classic like Tom and Jerry but can't stand most cartoons aired today (The Simpsons being a rare exception).

For a very long time, I never had the classy channels such as Channel 55 or Dubai 33. My antiquated tube had 12 channels (not all of which would tune either). Channel 3 was Aramco, 4 was Bahrain TV, 5 was Abu Dhabi, 6 was Saudi, Channel 9 and 11 were both Qatar (same channel tuned twice!!). As you can see, except for Aramco (which was an American channel aired from Saudi Arabia), all other channels were Arabic - and I didn't know more than five words in that language. I steadily weaned myself on cartoons that I didn't understand but still deciphered based on what played out on the screen. To name a few - Adnan wa Leena, Sindbad, Flona, Grendizer, Sandybelle and a host of other mostly dubbed Japanese animation.

Recently, I decided to look up a few of these to see if they could be purchased online. And Lo and Behold!!! They were still available. I lost no time in acquiring a couple of these - Adnan wa Leena (Konan, the future boy, 26 epsiodes) and Sindbad (52 episodes). Watched chapter after chapter with english sub-titles to make sure that I understood everything this time around.....:) Couldn't let masterpieces like these go obsolete.
