Walking down THE 'Nostalgia Lane' (Vaishali Khadilkar, Sep 2nd, 2007) |

I was just sitting and thinking one day about school, as I so often do, due to the amazing group that we have formed, and it just struck me…. Well we had our very own ‘Nostalgia Lane’.
Well the place I am referring to is the elevated walk in between the multi-purpose walk and our very own Main block. The reason is that, we all have memories related to it.
I remember, we used to take a walk there at every opportunity we found.
One would always find the latest additions to the school there. It was like “the’ happening place. We would meet most of our friends there.
One would see boys huddled in groups, making references to the passers by, groups of boys ogling at girls, also the other way round. One would see the person one has a crush on (oh the tender heart) and then would want to see the person again. So what does one do? Take a walk back. You could also see the latest ‘pair’ there, walking shyly together, and we would know, without being told that, that was the latest couple.
The walk has been witness to many heart breaks too. Directly or indirectly. Directly, coz you broke off with your boyfriend or girlfriend, and indirectly because, the person you have a secret crush on, has found someone else!
It was also like the unofficial school catwalk, as far as us girls were concerned. One would see the latest fashions in pinafores, the latest shoes, jackets, styles of socks and stockings and what not. People were very innovative with the few colours we were permitted, namely white shirt, navy blue pinafore or trousers, navy blue socks and black shoes!
I too have many memories related to the place. I remember, as soon as we got down from the bus, I would run to ‘the walk’ to see which of my friends had arrived. If the bus was late, I was saddened coz then I would get less time there. It was generally Dipti, Carol myself and Roopa in our gang. Occasionally the other friends joined in. We would divulge all secrets in these few minutes, have fights, talk about our latest crushes, talk about who’s eyeing who, and it was a place to catch up on studies too, during the time of exams.
My most fond memories are of the time that we used to be free during practicals. Our biology practicals were divided into two batches. One batch attended the morning session, before school started, and the other during the actual practical periods. We had taken the morning batch, and so the three periods during school time used to be free. We could do whatever we liked. We used to either go swimming or indulge in our favourite past-time of walking. Now this walk was along the class rooms. That meant we got to see inside the classes and see what was going on. It was great fun to walk outside when others were studying and try to disturb them. We would talk loudly, or laugh and always manage to catch the boys class attention. We could see then attending the boring lectures, especially chemistry or maths, and see their envious looks. That made our day!
Well all good-things have to end, and I think the teachers got wind of our mischievous nature. Soon all the windows were blocked with brown paper, so that we couldn’t look in and also barred because some guys used to run out of the class through the windows. Well I never tried the running out part but have seen many do it.
Students have come and gone, they too would have experienced the ups and downs of the teenage life, as we did. If the ‘Walk’ could talk, I am sure it will have many an interesting story to tell us. So for me, this place has a special place in my heart, I am sure you might too.
