I remember the day I first saw ISB.
It was a few days after we landed in Bahrain
and we had to go to school to take our entrance test.
The first thing that struck me was the size and the order with which it was run.
Mr Taneja administered our tests and Mrs Sequeira
told us about the uniforms. I was apprehensive, would
I fit in, would I make friends. I was in the
9th grade and had just said good bye to everyone I had known in Bangalore.
The Blue Bells club that we started,
the library that we started and the picnics
we had at the IISc campus , our budding women's lib club, as we called it,
our teachers viewed it very differently,
(why would they emphasize that especially girls cannot/should not climb
trees.. the unfairness of it all.. and we demonstrated many many
times that we could, to their displeasure,
it was inexplicable...)
at Air Force School, Bangalore, would all be memories.
Besides the pressures of being in a new school there was the
pressure of having to catch up two months of classes.
I entered the bus and my first class IX F
and stammered my name out to anyone
who asked me and there were so many people.
People asked me who my best
friend was in Banalgore and I repeated my
own name in sheer nervousness.
Mr Shivaramakrishnan asked me what velocity was,
and I informed him that I had no idea as
the 9th standard syllabus was new to me.
I remember the bus trips to and from school and the number of
buses really struck me , the first few days. Soon
I had friends in my class, friends
from my bus and bus stop, discussions
ranging from deep philosophy - Lakshmi I still don't know who I am,
to literature - Ranjana, after
Enid Blyton, I thought you were the best writer.
Swimming, gymnastics, photography - I tried it all...
Seaweeds - it started at the library when I was browsing with Sheeja and
came about to be our research project at the Science Seminar...
I also honed my public speaking skills and discovered a
passion for learning, research and academics.
I also stopped viewing teachers as "the enemy" and learned how somebody
could guide you and still be your friend.
Looking back, I learned a lot and grew a lot within the
walls of our dear Alma Mater with great memories I will always cherish...
I hope to visit someday and maybe rekinder
within me the spirit, drive and passion
that I am sure I got at ISB.
